Nuthatch Watching Me Watching It

This White-Breasted Nuthatch was watching me, while I watched it.

Nuthatch Hop

I like Nuthatches.  They are friendly and interesting birds. They move in very interesting ways. They often “hop” from one spot to another and they are very adept at hanging upside down, sideways, etc.

Here is one hopping to the feeder, from a tree. Notice how its wings are not out. A nuthatch can easily hope that distance, without every using it’s wings.

Here it is giving me a curious look that says, “What are you doing over there, watching me, pointing that thing at me?”

Today while out taking other photos I suddenly heard a hammering sound in the direction behind me, toward our house.  It sounded a lot like a small woodpecker pounding on a tree.  I looked and it was a nuthatch trying to get something that was inside of that tiny crack in the board on the roof.  I am not sure what it was after, but when I turned and pointed the camera at it, it darted to the brick of the chimney.  I couldn’t believe how well it hopped along the brick.  It did that for a bit, eying me, then decided I was too worrisome I guess, and flew.

I knew they were excellent at hanging onto trees and such.  But I thought it was quite impressive how well it hung onto the brick.
