Hole in tree

I’m still watching this new hole in the tree.  There doesn’t seem to be much going on (that I can see) but it does seem to have a little more carved out of it than the last time I looked.  So I hope to keep an eye on it.  If nothing uses it this year, I have a feeling that something will by next year for sure.

  1. This is a Pileated Woodpecker hole…you can tell by the shape. Have you seen the birds around or heard them? They are pretty loud when they knock on wood.

    • We see the Pileated Woodpecker around pretty frequently here. But typically it’s in the denser wooded area behind my house. Which is why I never get any good shots of them. I photograph them fairly often but they usually too deep in the woods for the view of them to be worth posting. And yes, they are very loud. We hear them frequently. This tree is in a somewhat open area. I’m really shocked that one stayed there long enough to do that. And shocked that nobody noticed it making it. This tree is in-between our house and my Grandparent’s place, and across from my parents. There isn’t much foot traffic where it is, but we hear them so well in the woods behind the house that it’s really surprising to me that nobody heard this hole being made. I keep trying to watch when I’m out for activity. Or photograph the hole using telephoto and then look at it later on my computer since it’s a better view than with the naked eye. But so far none of us around here have seen any activity around it at all. Maybe soon. I hope!
